About us

SOF-DI is an independent organization with the mission of improving the standard of living of smallholders in Kenya on a sustainable basis. It is funded by the charity “A Better World Ltd”. Donations from friends of the organisation are specifically allocated to water projects.

Mission Statement

SOF-DI primarily wants to provide assistance for self-help projects and counteract the "handout” mentality by promoting individual initiative and accountability. To this end SOF-DI supports and promotes the entrepreneurial thinking of farmers.

Where do you find us?

SOF-DI is a development cooperation for sustainable development with its focus of operation in the Western Province of Kenya. The smallholders of this region live under very poor conditions despite a relatively favorable climate.

Reasons for the poor yield are:

• Farmers do not practice crop rotation
• Severe soil erosion and poor soil quality
• Farmers can afford neither fertilizer nor adequate tools
• Dependence on rains due to a lack of irrigation systems
• Farmland is often interspersed with big rocks
• Small size of farm plots farm plots due to the partition of land among family members
• Apathy of farmers due to a perceived lack of opportunity
• Frequent disease due to malnutrition and lack of access to clean water
